Some of you are probably already familiar with the idea of having a Unique Selling Proposition (USP). I did a post on this topic last year. Your USP is the statement that tells a prospective client why they should even consider your product or service…as opposed to any other option that’s being presented to them (including the option of doing nothing at all).
A killer USP will…POSITION YOU…UNIQUELY IN YOUR MARKET…IN ORDER TO SELL.
Here’s the shortcut/template for developing a killer USP that I learned from one of my coaches, top-notch copywriter — John Carlton:
“We help [this group of people] … do [this benefit(s)] … [better].”
Positioning addition: “…[better] than [competitor or common wisdom].”
Your USP is really not about what you sell, but it’s more about what you sell “DOES” for your customer.
A winning USP is where you need to start if you want to increase sales.
As a marketing coach, I routinely come across independent professionals who promote themselves with vague generalities like, “Quality Service”, or “Trusted Advice”. Those types of qualifiers don’t convey any memorable value in today’s ever-increasing socially networked world. If your USP is going to be effective, it must be remembered. Being memorable comes from adding value that means something to your ideal prospect.
A good question to answer with your USP is…can you do something faster, better, easier, or simpler than your competitors?
