Of course it is. The real question is…how is it working? In other words, “What are you reaping today as a result of seeds sown yesterday?” Sometimes, we go through seasons in life where nothing seems to go the way we would like it. Business may be slow, therefore cash is tight, relationships may be a bit bumpy, and who knows what else. Things just aren’t going the way we would like them to go. These are some of the best times to look around and consider the question, “Who can I help to move their situation forward?”
I was inspired after reading a segment from Today God is First, a daily devotional by Os Hillman. In today’s segment, he talks about The Power of Serving Others. As I read it, the message resonated in my heart as something that we all need to remember…especially in difficult times. It’s one thing to be generous when times are good, but in reality…we really need to be generous when times are hard. Why do I say that? The scripture reads, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble“. (Psalm 46:1)
Christmas time is known for gift giving and generosity. However, the world is in economic crisis like never before. It’s not difficult to understand that there may not be as many gifts under the tree for some families. Christmas bonuses may not be as hefty either. Nevertheless, as we are in the Christmas season, there is no better time to consider the question, ‘How can I use my gifts to serve someone else?’ Maybe an employee, a next door neighbor, a family member, or anyone within our reach may need something that we have. Better yet, they may not need something, but someone…as in a listening ear, a hug, or some other demonstration of caring. Even when monetary resources are tight…we still have SO MUCH we can give.
What can you sow today, tomorrow, this week, or for the rest of this year in order to see someone else enjoy a nice Christmas? Let’s not take for granted all of the material or relational blessings we have received. There are so many who do not enjoy the wealth that we have been privileged to experience. Who knows…after we tend to the needs of others, God may manifest the answer to our prayers.
